TU Delft Solar Boat Team

Promoting Sustainable Innovation

The TU Delft Solar Boat Team is a Dreamteam from the TU Delft. The team consists of 26 ambitious students of ten different faculties from the TU Delft. In one year the students take up the challenge to design, produce and race with a fully functioning solar-powered boat.

Torque for design

It is fall 2017 when we receive a call from students of Technical University Delft. They are working on a Solar Boat and could use a sensor and some expertise. After a session with one of our Technical Sales Engineers it is clear what they need: a dynamic Torque Sensor.

Our Torque Sensor helps the students with the propeller design of the solar boat. By connecting the motor and the dynamic Torque sensor they run several tests. With the outcome they are able to determine what the best design is for their Solar Boat propeller.

Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge

This year the Solar Boat Team will be competing in the Offshore class of the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge. This is the equivalent world championship for solar boats. The boat will be designed to compete in rough seas.

The team will compete in two races: the race from Monaco to Ventimiglia (IT) and back (approximately 30 km) and the race from Monaco to Cannes (FR) and back, approximately 93 km. In order to win the competition, they need to set the fastest time for both races.

With winning the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge they want prove that a solar-powered boat with innovative technology is faster and uses the available energy more efficiently.

Crossing The Channel

In July 2019 the team wants to write history. The TU Delft Solar Boat Team will attempt to break the world record of the fastest solar boat ever to cross the English Channel.

In the last week of July, they plan to cross the strait between Calais and Dover as fast as possible. With this attempt, the students want to show the world that it is possible to cross the English Channel powered by solar panels only.

We are very proud of what this team has achieved so far! Visit the website for more information about the TU Delft Solar Boat Team.
