  • Carla Ketellapper-Zielman wins Grand Prix ice skating race at the Weissensee
28 January 2019
Marathon ice skater Carla Ketellapper-Zielman won the Grand Prix on the natural ice of the Austrian Weissensee on Monday. After 40 kilometers she was the fastest in the bunch sprint, although the difference with number two Lisa van der Geest was so small that the video images had to be viewed to designate a winner. Maya de Jong was third.

The Grand Prix is a pre-competition for the Alternative Elfstedentocht, the Dutch 'Elf Cities Skating Tour', which is scheduled for Wednesday January 30th on the Weissensee and is 200 kilometers long. This typical Dutch skate marathon is held in Austria due to the absence of long periods of frost in the Netherlands.

The 34-year-old Carla Ketellapper-Zielman won the Open Championship on the Weissensee for the third time. She did that earlier in 2010 and 2016. Carla Ketellapper-Zielman won the Alternative Elfstedentocht one time in 2012.
