Cryogene lage en hoge temperatuur rekstrookjes

Althen's cryogenic and extended-temperature strain gauges are designed for strain measurements under extreme temperature conditions, from cryogenic environments to elevated temperatures. Selected CE Series models operate from −269°C to +200°C and feature a specially treated measuring grid to minimize zero-point drift at very low temperatures. Explore our range to find a suitable strain gauge for your test material, temperature range and measurement requirements.

Cryogenic strain gauges for extreme temperature measurements

Cryogenic strain gauges are designed to measure mechanical strain in materials and structures exposed to extremely low temperatures. Specialized gauge materials and measuring grids help reduce temperature-related measurement effects and support stable performance under cryogenic conditions.

Althen offers cryogenic strain gauges for low-temperature applications, as well as selected models covering a wider operating range up to +200°C.

Why are cryogenic strain measurements challenging?

At very low temperatures, changes in material properties and thermal contraction can affect both the test specimen and the strain gauge. Differences in thermal expansion between the gauge and test material can produce apparent strain, while temperature changes may also influence gauge resistance and zero-point stability.

These effects make appropriate gauge selection, temperature compensation and installation particularly important.

What should you consider when selecting a cryogenic strain gauge?

  • Operating temperature: Check the minimum and maximum operating temperatures for the specific gauge model.
  • Temperature compensation: Distinguish between the gauge's operating temperature range and the temperature range over which compensation characteristics are specified.
  • Test material: Consider thermal contraction and the strain gauge's compatibility with the thermal expansion characteristics of the specimen.
  • Installation materials: Select adhesives, protective materials and lead wires suitable for the full temperature cycle.
  • Measurement duration and cycling: Consider repeated cooling and heating cycles, stabilization time and possible zero-point changes.
  • Gauge configuration: Choose the appropriate gauge length, measuring direction and number of measuring grids for the application.

Always consult the individual product datasheet for operating limits, temperature compensation ranges and installation requirements.
