- Stainless steel construction with custom designs for demanding measurement environmen
Kiel probes for accurate total pressure measurement
Aeroprobe Kiel Probes measure the total pressure of flowing gases and liquids, even when the flow direction varies. Their distinctive shrouded design reduces measurement errors caused by changes in the incoming flow angle.
Unlike conventional Pitot probes, Kiel probes use a surrounding shroud to straighten the incoming flow before it reaches the pressure measurement opening. This makes them particularly suitable for applications with changing flow directions, such as turbomachinery testing and aerodynamic research.
Aeroprobe Kiel probes do not require aerodynamic calibration. They are available in different geometries and can be adapted to specific installation requirements.
Probe configurations for different applications
Straight Kiel probes
Straight Kiel probes are primarily used to measure total pressure in flows approaching a test section. They are well suited to wind tunnel installations where the mounting arrangement is perpendicular to the airflow.
Drilled elbow Kiel probes
Drilled elbow Kiel probes are designed for installations with limited space. Their geometry allows pressure measurements at targeted locations, including the narrow spaces between blade rows in compact turbomachinery.
Custom Kiel probes and combined measurements
Aeroprobe offers custom-engineered Kiel probes for specialised mounting arrangements and integration into pressure measurement rakes.
Combination Kiel and Total Air Temperature (TAT) probes are also available. These provide total pressure and temperature measurements using a single instrument.
Standard probes are manufactured from 300-series stainless steel. Nickel-based superalloys are available for applications requiring additional strength or temperature resistance.
Applications
Aeroprobe Kiel probes are used in wind tunnel testing, turbomachinery research, aerodynamic development and other applications where the flow direction may vary.
Kiel probes measure total pressure but do not determine the flow angle. For simultaneous measurements of flow direction and pressure, Aeroprobe Multi-hole Probes may be more suitable.
Althen Sensors & Controls helps engineers select the appropriate probe geometry, materials and configuration for their measurement requirements.
