Linear inductive position sensors in paper making machines

Explore the project

Paper manufacturing is a demanding process that takes place in harsh environments characterized by high temperatures, corrosive chemicals, and damp conditions. For one leading manufacturer of paper machines, these challenges required a robust sensor solution capable of withstanding the intense operational conditions while delivering reliable performance.

Requirements for the linear position sensor

The manufacturer needed a sensor that could not only operate efficiently at elevated temperatures but also remain unaffected by the corrosive and damp environment prevalent in paper manufacturing facilities. Additionally, the sensor had to provide precise measurements over extended periods, ensuring minimal maintenance and downtime.

Our solution

We were able to meet the customer’s specific requirements by offering a modified version of the P101 linear position sensor. Two key customizations made the P101 ideal for this application:

  • Temperature-resilient output option: The P101 was equipped with a 2-wire 4-20mA output option, a solid industry-standard configuration. This allowed the sensor to transmit accurate and reliable data over long periods, even when exposed to high operating temperatures. This output format also ensured compatibility with the customer's existing control systems.
  • Stainless steel construction: recognizing the need for durability in a corrosive and damp environment, we redesigned certain components of the P101 sensor, using entirely stainless steel materials. This modification enhanced the sensor's resistance to both physical wear and chemical corrosion, extending its lifespan and reliability under the challenging conditions of paper manufacturing.
