8047M Propeller shaft potential monitoring set

Complete monitoring set for visualising the potential difference between the propeller shaft and the ship’s hull

Key features

  • Analogue monitoring range from 0 to 500 mV
  • Operates independently without an external power supply
  • Provides a clear indication of shaft earthing system performance

Monitoring propeller shaft potential

The 8047M propeller shaft potential monitoring set measures and displays the potential difference between a vessel’s propeller shaft and its hull. It provides a clear visual indication of whether the propeller shaft earthing system is operating correctly.

The system uses an additional brush holder with a single monitoring brush that runs over the silver track of the shaft earthing slipring. Unlike the earthing brush holder, the monitoring brush holder is electrically insulated from the ship’s hull. It is connected to an analogue millivolt meter installed in the engine room.

Independent monitoring without a power supply

The analogue meter displays the measured potential difference across a range of 0 to 500 mV. Because the monitoring set operates without an external power supply, it provides a simple and dependable method for checking the performance of the shaft earthing system.

Continuous visual monitoring helps the crew detect an increasing potential difference at an early stage. This may indicate worn brushes, poor contact with the slipring or another issue affecting the electrical connection between the propeller shaft and the hull.

Part of a complete shaft earthing system

The 8047M is designed for use alongside the 8047A propeller shaft earthing set. Together, these components form a complete propeller shaft earthing and monitoring system for seagoing vessels.

The monitoring set is suitable for installation in engine rooms where a direct and easy-to-read indication of shaft potential is required.
