MEMS accelerometers (single & multi axis)

A MEMS accelerometer (uniaxial and multiaxial) is a microelectromechanical system used to measure acceleration in different directions. A single-axis MEMS accelerometer measures acceleration along a single axis, while a multi-axis MEMS accelerometer can measure acceleration along multiple axes simultaneously, such as in the three dimensions x, y and z.

A MEMS accelerometer offers high accuracy, sensitivity and reliability in measuring acceleration. It is used in a variety of applications, such as in automotive engineering for stability control, in aerospace for aircraft monitoring, in medical technology for motion detection and in consumer electronics for gesture control of devices.

  • Precise measurement along a defined axis
Optimised for applications where specific movements or vibrations need to be detected.
  • High signal quality thanks to reduced cross-talk
Single-axis sensors provide clear and stable measurement data.
  • Compact and versatile sensor technology
Thanks to modern MEMS technology, the sensors are small, robust and versatile.

Advantages of Single-Axis Accelerometers

  • High measurement accuracy in a defined direction
Focusing on a single axis enables precise and stable measurement results.
  • Reduced interference from other motion directions
Single-axis sensors minimize cross-axis sensitivity and provide clear, reliable signals.
  • Compact design using MEMS technology
Modern sensors are small, lightweight, and easy to integrate into existing systems.
  • High reliability and robustness
Designed for industrial environments, these sensors offer long-term stability and durability.
  • Easy system integration
Various output signals allow flexible integration into control systems and data acquisition platforms.

Typical Applications

Single-axis accelerometers are used in a wide range of technical applications, particularly where motion needs to be measured in a specific direction:

  • Machine monitoring and vibration analysis
  • Automotive engineering and stability control
  • Aerospace applications (e.g., flight monitoring)
  • Structural and civil engineering monitoring
  • Industrial automation
  • Medical technology and motion tracking
  • Testing and measurement systems
  • Consumer electronics and gesture recognition

How to Choose the Right Single-Axis Accelerometer

Selecting the right single-axis accelerometer depends on the specific requirements of your application.

  • Measurement range
Depending on the application, sensors are required for either low or high acceleration levels.
  • Sensitivity and resolution
High sensitivity is essential for precise measurement tasks and detecting small changes in motion.
  • Frequency range
The sensor should match the dynamic behavior of the application to ensure accurate signal capture.
  • Technology (e.g., MEMS, capacitive, piezoelectric)
Each measurement principle offers specific advantages depending on the use case.
  • Environmental conditions
Factors such as temperature, vibration, and humidity must be taken into account when selecting the sensor.

The experts at Althen Sensors & Controls will be happy to support you in selecting the right single-axis accelerometer for your application.
