What tension and compression measuring ranges are available for cylindrical load cells?
"Cylindrical load cells are available for a wide range of tension and compression forces, from relatively low loads to very high capacities. For precise weighing and force measurement, models such as the ALF256 are available from 0.2 kN to 60 kN. For axial tension and compression loads, the ALF214 covers measuring ranges up to 60 kN. For compression-only applications, the ALF218 offers measuring ranges up to 400 kN. The highest tension and compression capacity within this product group is provided by the ALF317, with measuring ranges up to 1,000 kN.
The appropriate version depends on the force direction, required measuring range, installation conditions, accuracy requirements and possible load peaks."
What overload capacity do cylindrical force sensors provide?
The overload capacity of a cylindrical load cell depends on the model and measuring range. A typical safe overload margin is 50% of rated capacity. Depending on the design, the breaking load may be 100%, 200% or up to 300% of rated capacity.
For example, the ALF214 and ALF317 have a 50% safe overload and a breaking load of 200% of rated capacity. The ALF218 has a 50% safe overload and a breaking load of 300% of rated capacity, while the ALF256 has a 50% safe overload and a breaking load of 100% of rated capacity.
When selecting the appropriate sensor, the maximum operating force, possible load peaks, dynamic loading and required safety margin should all be considered.
