Specialized strain gauges for demanding measurement applications

Not every measurement can be performed with a conventional strain gauge. Some applications require a specific measuring grid, sensor geometry or electrical configuration to obtain useful results.

Althen offers specialized strain gauges and related measurement elements for bolt strain, crack propagation, fatigue testing, axial stress evaluation, thermal expansion, surface temperature and measurements in magnetic fields. The range also includes gauges for building force, pressure and torque transducers.

Which strain gauge is suitable for your application?

Bolt strain measurement

BTM and BTMC Series gauges are designed for measuring tensile strain in bolts. They can support bolt-loading investigations when installed and evaluated using an appropriate measurement method. Gauge selection depends on bolt dimensions, installation access and the required measurement accuracy.

Crack propagation monitoring

FAC Series crack detection gauges are designed to detect the progression of fatigue cracks in metal specimens. They are useful for investigating crack propagation during material and component testing. Their operating principle and output should not be confused with conventional continuous strain measurement.

Fatigue and high-endurance testing

DSF Series gauges are intended for fatigue tests involving repeated loading. Selection requires attention to the specified fatigue life, strain amplitude, installation and operating temperature. The maximum strain limit and fatigue endurance are separate specifications.

Strain measurement in magnetic fields

QMF, MFLA, MFCAL and MFRAL Series gauges address measurements in magnetic-field environments. Depending on the model, single-axis, dual-element and three-element configurations are available. Select the gauge according to the magnetic environment and the required measurement directions.

Thermal expansion and surface temperature

CTELA Series elements support thermal expansion coefficient measurements, while TF Series elements are designed for surface temperature measurement. These products serve different measurement purposes and should be selected accordingly.

Axial stress and combined loading

SFA Series gauges are designed for axial stress evaluation under specified material assumptions, while DD Series gauges enable bending and tensile strain components to be evaluated separately. Correct interpretation depends on the measurement configuration and relevant material properties.

Sensor and transducer construction

Specialized strain gauges are also used as sensing elements in load cells, force transducers, pressure sensors and torque transducers. Selection depends on the elastic element, expected strain distribution, bridge configuration and long-term stability requirements.

What should you consider when selecting a specialized strain gauge?

  • Measurement objective: Determine whether you need strain, crack progression, temperature, thermal expansion or a derived mechanical quantity.
  • Test material and geometry: Check the specimen material, dimensions, surface condition and installation access.
  • Loading conditions: Consider static, dynamic and cyclic loading, including fatigue-life requirements.
  • Electrical configuration: Select the appropriate resistance, measurement axes, bridge circuit and signal conditioning.
  • Environmental conditions: Check temperature limits, magnetic-field compatibility and required protection.
  • Installation: Follow the specified bonding, positioning, wiring and calibration procedures.

Always consult the individual product datasheet to confirm the applicable specifications and installation requirements.
