Seismic / Low-Frequency Vibration Sensors – Precise Measurement of Minimal Vibrations
Seismic or low-frequency vibration sensors are specialized devices designed to measure very slow movements and low-frequency vibrations. They are used wherever even the smallest vibrations or movements must be detected with high accuracy—particularly in areas such as structural monitoring, geophysics, research, or precision measurement technology.
Unlike conventional vibration sensors, seismic sensors are specifically optimized for the low-frequency range down to quasi-static movements (near 0 Hz). This makes them ideal for applications where standard sensors reach their limits.
Seismic vibration sensors provide reliable data for monitoring structures, analyzing ground movements, or detecting subtle mechanical changes.
How Seismic Vibration Sensors Work
Seismic vibration sensors typically operate based on the principle of an inertial mass (seismometer principle) that is mounted relative to the sensor housing.
When the housing moves—due to vibrations or ground motion—the mass initially remains at rest due to its inertia. The relative movement between the mass and the housing is measured and converted into an electrical signal.
Depending on the sensor type, different technologies are used:
- Electrodynamic sensors for very low frequencies
- Servo-based systems for maximum precision and stability
- Capacitive measurement principles for high-resolution applications
These sensors enable precise measurement of vibration velocity, displacement, or acceleration in the low-frequency range.

How to Choose the Right Seismic Vibration Sensor
Selecting a suitable sensor strongly depends on the application, particularly with regard to low-frequency requirements.
- Frequency range (especially low frequencies)
The sensor must be specifically designed for the desired frequency range—especially for very low frequencies down to near 0 Hz. - Sensitivity and resolution
High sensitivity is essential for measuring very small movements. - Measured variable (displacement, velocity, or acceleration)
Depending on the application, the appropriate measurement parameter should be selected. - Dynamic range
The sensor must be capable of reliably capturing both small and larger movements. - Environmental conditions
Temperature, humidity, or mechanical influences can affect measurement accuracy and should be considered. - Mounting and location
Sensor positioning is particularly important, as external influences can affect the measurement results. - Long-term stability and drift
For monitoring applications, stable sensor performance over long periods is crucial.
