Reliable propeller shaft earthing

The 8047A Propeller Shaft Earthing Set provides a low resistance electrical connection between a vessel’s rotating propeller shaft and its hull. The system safely directs electrical current from the shaft to the hull, helping to protect bearings, gears and other propulsion components against electrical discharge damage.

The main component is a copper slipring with a solid silver inlay. It is mounted around the propeller shaft using stainless steel clamping bands and dedicated connectors. Two silver graphite brushes run continuously over the silver track to maintain reliable electrical continuity while the shaft is rotating.

Reduced wear and maintenance costs

Uncontrolled electrical currents can cause spark erosion and pitting on bearings and other components in the propulsion system. By providing a controlled path to the vessel’s hull, the 8047A helps reduce component wear, unplanned maintenance and associated operating costs.

The brush holder is connected to the hull by an earthing cable. The use of silver contact surfaces and brushes containing 80% silver supports low electrical resistance and stable performance in demanding marine environments.

Complete propeller shaft earthing set

The 8047A is supplied as a complete monitoring set for installation on marine propeller shafts. A separate monitoring system can be added to measure and display the potential difference between the shaft and the hull.
