Submersible inclinometers – Precise tilt measurement underwater

Submersible inclinometers are specially developed sensors for precise measurement of tilt angles in underwater environments. They are used to reliably determine the position and orientation of structures, systems or measurement setups underwater.

These sensors are designed for continuous use in marine, offshore or hydrological applications. Thanks to their robust design and pressure-resistant housings, they operate reliably even under extreme conditions. Modern underwater tilt sensors provide precise measured values even at great water depths and in corrosive environments such as seawater.

Typical areas of application include the monitoring of underwater structures, offshore installations, pipelines or measurement platforms. The sensors provide important information about the alignment and stability of such systems and therefore contribute to the safe monitoring of technical installations.

How submersible inclinometers work

Submersible tilt sensors measure the angle of an object relative to Earth’s gravity. Measurement is usually performed using MEMS-based accelerometers or other high-precision sensing elements that detect the effect of gravity along several axes. The measured acceleration components are electronically evaluated so that the tilt angle of an object can be determined. Depending on the sensor, tilt can be measured in one or two axes, such as pitch and roll.

To enable underwater use, the sensors are housed in pressure-resistant, corrosion-resistant enclosures and equipped with waterproof connectors. This allows them to be used at greater depths and to provide stable measured values even under high pressure. The measurement data is then transmitted via analogue or digital interfaces to data acquisition systems, controllers or monitoring platforms.

Answers to the most important technical questions

For which operating depths are submersible tiltmeters suitable?

Althens' submersible tiltmeters are designed for different water depths and pressure ranges depending on the model. For applications in shallow water, the A820 Shallow Water, for example, is suitable with water resistance up to 50 m. For offshore, marine, and deep-sea applications, deep-water versions such as the A802 or D802 are available, which are waterproof down to 2,500 m.

For particularly robust underwater and subsea applications, tilt sensors such as the S623, G623, or X623 are also available with IP68 protection for pressures up to 350 bar. Depending on the operating conditions, this corresponds to a very large immersion depth; for the G623, this is specified as up to 3,500 m.

Which measuring ranges are available for submersible tiltmeters?

Submersible tiltmeters are available in different models for small precision inclinations through to large angular ranges. High-precision underwater tiltmeters such as the A820 Shallow Water are available for measuring ranges of ±0.5°, ±3°, or ±50° as single- or dual-axis versions. This makes them suitable for precise structural monitoring, platform levelling, and angle measurement in fresh and salt water.

For large angular measuring ranges in underwater, marine, and offshore applications, sensors such as the S623 or G623 are available. These are factory-calibrated to the required measuring angle and typically cover ranges from 15° to 160°.
