Industrial tilt angle measurement systems detect the angle of an object relative to gravity. Depending on the sensor technology, different physical measurement principles are used.
Capacitive tilt sensors
In capacitive tilt sensors, a dielectric is placed between two specially shaped capacitor plates. When the sensor tilts, the capacitance between the plates changes. This change is electronically evaluated and converted into a proportional, linear output signal. Capacitive sensors offer very high accuracy and are particularly suitable for precise industrial applications.
MEMS-based tilt angle sensors
In addition to capacitive sensors, MEMS-based tilt sensors are widely used today. MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) refers to a manufacturing technology for producing very small mechanical and electronic components in microsystems engineering. How are industrial tilt angle measuring systems mounted?
Althen industrial tilt angle measuring systems are mounted directly on the machine, system, or structure whose inclination is to be monitored. A stable, flat, and preferably low-vibration mounting is essential so that the sensor can reliably detect the actual change in inclination.
Depending on the model and application, mounting may be carried out, for example, on a side wall, on a mounting surface, or in a control cabinet or enclosure environment. For single-axis systems, the measuring axis must be correctly aligned with the desired direction of inclination. For two-axis systems, the correct orientation of the X and Y axes must also be observed.
Before commissioning, the installation position, zero point, measuring range, switching points, and electrical connections should be checked according to the datasheet. Environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, vibration, and mechanical loads must also be taken into account during mounting. What switching points do industrial tilt angle measuring systems have?
The switching points of Althen industrial tilt angle measuring systems with switching function are freely adjustable depending on the model and measuring range. In switching systems such as the NSS1-IP or NSZ1-IP, 2 potential-free relay switching contacts are available. The limit values can be adjusted over the entire measuring range using internal potentiometers. Depending on the version, the measuring range extends from ±3° to ±60° or from 0° to 90°. The switching accuracy is a maximum of 0.5% of the measuring range at 23 °C.
For two-axis applications, the NSS2-M2-IP, for example, provides a total of 4 potential-free relay switching contacts, meaning 2 switching contacts per axis. The switching points can be set internally for both axes and directions. The preferred measuring range here is ±3°, ±5°, or ±10°; other measuring ranges are available on request. Here too, the switching accuracy is a maximum of 0.5% of the measuring range.
The relay contacts are designed for a maximum switching capacity of 30 VDC / 0.5 A. The NSZ1-IP also includes a standard switching delay of 1 second; other delay times are available on request.

The version operates with the type of protection intrinsic safety “Ex ib” and is intended for connection to a certified intrinsically safe circuit. It can be used in industrial applications where inclinations must be monitored reliably while ATEX requirements apply.
