Rolling circle diameter of railway wheels
Wheel diameter measurement tools help maintenance teams measure the rolling circle diameter of railway wheels quickly and accurately. This supports wheel condition monitoring, maintenance planning and safe rail vehicle operation.
Althen offers electronic wheel diameter gauges for trains, trams and railway maintenance sites. The tools are easy to use, suitable for wheel diameters from 400 to 1,400 mm and designed for high precision. Althen offers electronic wheel diameter gauges for trams, metro, trains and locomotives, to be used at location or at railway maintenance sites.

Why measure wheel diameter?
Railway wheels are subject to continuous wear. Changes in wheel diameter can affect ride quality, maintenance intervals and safe operation. Accurate wheel diameter measurement helps maintenance teams detect wear in time. It also supports better planning of wheel reprofiling, replacement and service work.
Calibration of wheel diameter measurement tools
For reliable measurement results, wheel diameter gauges must be calibrated regularly. Althen can calibrate the railway measuring instruments for wheel diameter measurement. During calibration, the gauges are configured with fixed geometrical parameters:
- Diameter of the measuring balls
- “Base in a square”
- Temperature correction
They are then checked against certified Mitutoyo references, after which the deviation between the theoretical and measured wheel diameter is determined. Calibration helps ensure measurement accuracy, traceability and long-term reliability.
