How does the measuring principle of fibre-optic pressure sensors work?
WLPI stands for White Light Polarization Interferometry. With this principle, pressure is not measured electrically at the measuring point, but through an optical change inside a fibre-optic sensor. The measuring system consists of the fibre-optic pressure sensor and an evaluation unit that analyses the optical signal.
Inside the sensor head there is a very small optical measuring structure, often based on the principle of a Fabry-Pérot interferometer. In simple terms, a tiny optical cavity is created between two reflective surfaces. When pressure is applied to the sensing element, a diaphragm deforms slightly. This changes the distance within the optical cavity. This change in distance affects the phase or interference pattern of the reflected light. The WLPI evaluation unit detects this change and calculates the pressure value from it.
The advantage of this principle is that no electrical signal is required at the measuring point. The information is transmitted as light through the optical fibre. As a result, WLPI pressure sensors are immune to electromagnetic interference and are particularly suitable for environments with high voltage, strong EMI/RFI influences, hazardous areas or long transmission distances.
