Important selection criteria for industrial pressure transducers

When selecting a suitable industrial pressure transducer for your application, several key factors should be considered to ensure optimal performance and system compatibility:

1. Type of medium: Gas or liquid

Check whether the sensor is suitable for gaseous, liquid, or aggressive media.

Materials such as stainless steel or special coatings provide protection against corrosion.

2. Pressure range and overpressure resistance

Select the appropriate measuring range, such as 0–10 bar or 0–1,000 bar, according to your application.

Check whether the sensor can also withstand temporary overpressure or pressure peaks.

3. Accuracy and resolution

Most standard pressure transducers provide excellent accuracy for industrial applications.

For precise control and regulation processes, long-term stability is equally important.

4. Temperature range

Consider the permissible temperature range for both the medium and the surrounding environment, for example from −40 to +125 °C.

Optional temperature compensation can ensure stable measurement results under changing environmental conditions.

Answers to the most important technical questions

Which connections are needed for industrial pressure transducers for high pressures?

For high pressures, the correct process connection is particularly important. In very high pressure ranges, special high-pressure connections are used to ensure reliable sealing and high pressure resistance. High-pressure transducers such as the AHP1000/AHP1100 from Althen operate up to 5,000 bar and use an F250-C Autoclave connection or, alternatively, an M16 × 1.5 female thread with cone sealing. This type of connection is designed for secure sealing at very high pressures.

For standard industrial pressure transducers in lower to medium high-pressure ranges, for example up to 1,000 bar, common process connections include G1/4", 1/4" NPT, G1/2" or 1/2" NPT. The selection depends on the pressure range, medium, sealing concept, installation space and existing process interface.

In addition to the mechanical connection, the electrical connection must also suit the application. Depending on the model, options may include connectors according to EN175301-803 Form A, M12 connectors, cable outputs and output signals such as 4–20 mA, 0–5 V, 0–10 V, mV/V or digital interfaces.

For high-pressure applications, the connection should always be selected according to the pressure range, overload resistance, medium, temperature and safety requirements. Althen supports you in selecting the right pressure transducer with the appropriate process and electrical connection for your application.

Is there a special pin assignment for industrial pressure transducers?

Yes, industrial pressure transducers from Althen can have different electrical connections and pin assignments depending on the model. The standard pin assignment is specified in the relevant datasheet and depends on factors such as the output signal, wiring type and connector, for example 2-wire, 3-wire or 4-wire connection.

Many pressure transducers are available with different electrical connections, such as DIN connectors, M12 connectors or cable outputs. For the M20, for example, the listed connection options include a 4-pin DIN connector, a 4-pin M12 connector and a PUR cable. Various output signals such as 4–20 mA, 0–5 V, 1–5 V or 0–10 V are also available.

A special pin assignment or alternative electrical connection may be possible depending on the sensor type and application. The AGS4200 series, for example, is offered with optional outputs and electrical connections. For projects with existing wiring, replacement requirements or customer-specific integration, the desired pin assignment should therefore be coordinated with Althen before ordering.

Are there industrial pressure transducers for the hydraulic measuring range (250–350 bar)?

Yes, Althen offers industrial pressure transducers for typical hydraulic measuring ranges such as 250 bar or 350 bar. These pressure ranges are commonly used in hydraulic systems, test benches, machine control systems and mobile machinery.

When selecting a sensor, engineers should consider not only the nominal measuring range, but also possible pressure peaks, overload resistance, medium, temperature range, process connection and output signal. For hydraulic applications, robust pressure transducers with suitable process connections and industrial output signals such as 4–20 mA or 0–10 V are commonly used.

Suitable transducers include the MPM4511, AGS4200 and MPM380. These models cover typical high-pressure ranges in hydraulic systems and are designed for liquids and demanding industrial environments.
