Sensors for marine, shipping and lock systems
Shipping requires specialized sensors for demanding environments and hazardous areas that are highly reliable and safe. We supply a special range of sensors for harsh environments (gas, dust and vapor), explosion-proof and intrinsically safe, with ATEX, IECEx or CSA certification. Our sensors and measurement systems help you save costs during maintenance and operation and can be part of your automation and digitalization planning.
Sensors and measurement systems from Althen can be used for a variety of maritime applications, such as condition monitoring of ship engines, position measurements of hydraulic cylinders, pressure measurements of tanks or load measurements for cranes and lifting devices on deck.
For the construction and maintenance of lock systems, we not only provide you with the appropriate measurement technology, but if required we can also take care of planning and data acquisition directly on site.
Marine and lock construction and maintenance applications

Monitoring forces and overloads at lock gates
When opening and closing fixed airlock doors, considerable forces act on the hinges and drive systems. To accurately measure these forces and detect overloads at an early stage, load pins and load shackles and load shackles are used at hinge points or connecting structures.
Especially in European inland waterways with historic lock systems, this is important when modernizing and renovating existing structures.

Stroke and position monitoring for gate systems
Precise length measurements are essential for the reliable control of lift gates, roller shutters, and segment locks.
Linear potentiometers or linear inductive postion sensors continuously monitor the position and speed of moving components within the locking system.
When combined with signal amplifiers, the data is seamlessly integrated into modern control and automation systems, a key enabler in the digital transformation of locking infrastructure across Europe.

Structural monitoring and strain measurement on lock systems
Linear inductive displacement transducers or linear potentiometers are used to monitor structural deformations and movements — such as uplift or sagging caused by groundwater pressure or ship impact. These sensors detect even the slightest changes in lock gates, guide rails, or foundations, with millimeter-level accuracy. Such solutions are particularly valuable for protecting heritage-listed locks or those under special structural stress, for example, along the Elbe, the Danube, or in the Kiel canal in Germany.

Navigation support and position monitoring for lock maintenance vessels
Precise navigation is essential when performing maintenance in narrow lock chambers or within the lock channel itself. Electronic precision compasses deliver reliable course data, even during slow and complex maneuvers.
When combined with data loggers, they enable the recording of motion data, position angles, and control inputs. This information is invaluable for documenting operations, analyzing performance, and upgrading maintenance or inspection systems.

Cargo monitoring and crane control on cargo ships
Accurate load control is essential in the loading and unloading of container and bulk ships. Load pins and shackle transducers are used on loading equipment, lifting jacks and cranes to prevent overloading and monitor the center of gravity of the load.
Combined with data loggers and signal amplifiers, load curves can be recorded and analyzed, an important requirement for safety certification and insurance requirements.

Rudder position monitoring and steering control on inland vessels
Rotation sensors on steering motors and steering cylinders provide precise control of inland vessels, especially in narrow channels or during docking.
They provide real-time feedback from the rudder position to the steering console, which is essential for safe and precise maneuvering.
In combination with precision electronic compasses, highly accurate course data can be recorded - an important aspect when retrofitting semi-automatic auxiliary systems.
Precision sensors for safe, efficient maritime operations
Sensor technology is playing an increasingly important role in making the maritime sector safer, smarter, more efficient and sustainable. Sensors enable new opportunities to enhance onboard safety, reduce maintenance and operational costs, improve performance and minimise unplanned downtime.
Digitalisation and automation facilitate better communication between smart vessels and shore-based power systems, a key requirement for the future of shipping.Althen Sensors & Controls offers a broad portfolio of high-quality sensors and measurement solutions from specialised manufacturers, suitable for a wide range of maritime applications.
